Letter to Eng110.01 takers

Dear students,
I am really happy to have English110.01 class this quarter. It's a really interesting course, and if you work hard, you will get a really good grade on it. I still remember taht on the first day, we were assigned a First Day Writing assignment, which asked about our general idea about English 110.01. And on that very moment, we knew that we were going to discuss food and foodways this quarter. Then we began the first paper writing. It was about to write a academic research paper about food. First I followed the instruction to take five steps to analize a cat food advertisement. I think this is really important and everyone should take it seriously, because the following papers are all based on the ideas taken on the notes. Then we needed to turn the worksheet into a primary source analysis. Basicly I just wrote down the point I took in the worksheet, and use proper language to make them paragraphs, and chose the important points to write about, and get rid of the unimportant things. Then we turned to find another source, which is called secondary source. I used the same way to analize it, and link it with the primary source in some way, and make them a joint paper, which is called secondary source integration. Then here came a big paper called academic research paper. The former papers were the bases of this one, because basicly the ARP is the SSI, but with a formal format called MLA. I did good in all these three assignments, and I think the most important thing is that you should do the worksheet carefully and analize the samples carefully. Then we came to the public writing. We should write something related to food but reflect it to a large issue. And the language should be informal and have a good balance of ethos, pathos, and logos. After that, we should edit other' paper, and make it better to submit to commonplace. Also we have five blogs to write during this quarter. I think that's all I want to share with you guys. Good luck in your 110.01 course, and have fun!

Best
Yingyu

Food Way and Myself

I chose these two images as my multi-media blog source, because they are tightly related to my childhood. In my home country, cotton candy is a really popular snack for children. It's cheap, but delicious. I still remember when I was five, I asked my mom to get cotton candy for me everyday. It was only 50fen in RMB, and that's about 7 cents. It was unbelievably cheap, but that was once my favorite candy in my childhood. It has a cloud shape, so children always take it as cloud in the sky. When they hold the candy, they imagine themselves are over the cloud flying in the sky, which realease children's imagination when they are young. I love cotton candy, which can only be found in China, which is different from the one in America. It contains my memories, my childhood, and my dreams.
Wish you guys have a happy weekend! :)

Mid-autumn Festival and Moon Cake Tradition

In acient China, there was a saying that change of moon affects people on the world. As we know, moon would change from new moon to full moon every month. Acient Chinese took this common rule as the sign of sky. They took the moon as a family. Most of the time, the moon is not full,so it means most of the time, the family members separate in everywhere. Once the moon becomes full, the family should gather together. When it comes August 15th, the moon would appear big and round, so family should gather together to have dinner to celebrate this special day. As the tradition, people in China have Moon cake on Mid-Autumn Festival. Moon cake is the symbol of full moon. It's round with some words on it. Always the words are some good wishes, such as fortune, healthy body, and happiness. It's common and traditional to have moon cake on the special festival. Although the tradition and the way of cooking moon cake has changed, the meaning of having moon cake on Mid-Autumn Festival never changed.

Primary Sources for PSA

This is, obviously, an advertisement of cat food. A cute cat in the middle of this picture is eating the cat food with great pleasure. The background and the cat form a obvious contrast in color, since all the kitchen is in white color, while the cat is grey with stripes. The contrast in color can easily draw our attention to the cat at the first sight, which will lead us to see the cat's tail. It's what I found interesting in this advertisement. The tail was made to make a heart shape, and we can get the direct impression about the cat's feeling about cat food. She likes the food so much, so her tail becomes heart-shaped to tell other how enjoyable and happy she is when eating the fatanstic cat food.

This is another advertisement, which was made by Burger King. The background is black, while the hanbueger and words on the right are both in bright colors. We would look at the hamburger first due to the color contrast. Also we would easily notice the Big Mac's box under the Whooper. From the words on the right, we can see the purpose to make such an advertisement. It wants to convey that the Whooper is bigger than the Big Mac. This advertisement has a very sharp theme, and it's really agressive to Mcdonals, which we can simply figure out by the first glance of this advertisement.

Memories about food

(picture from: http://www.nihaotw.com/jm/tqfc/200902/t20090226_431758.htm)
Food, for me, is not only what we eat everyday, but also contains a deeper meaning. As we know, food can provide us energy, enjoyment, and even a chance to save other's life. On May 12th, 2008, a big disaster hit southwest of China. On that day, a big earthquake brought terror, death, and endless suffer to chinese people. It caused more than 67,000 deaths, and among the people died in this disaster, 5,333 students lost their life. Futhermore, this disaster destroyed highway and other path which could lead people run away from their ruined hometown to search for help and food or water. They were suffered not only because of the terrible disaster taking away people they loved, but also the lack of food and water. They were stuck in the ruins without any supply. They suffered a lot from hunger and thirst. At that very moment, food first strongly proved its importance to those people. The saving program contined for half a month, more and more people died under the ruins during that period due to hunger and dehydration. They were lucky to survive from the earthquake, but finally they were beaten by hunger and thirst. I went to Wenchuan where at the center of the earthquake after the disaster happened, with food and water. People suffered from the earthquake quickly surrounded me to beg for some food and water. They were so happy after receiving food, and some of them even cried. I was strongly impressed by such a view. I saw how much they suffered from that, and finally realized the power of food, and how terrible hunger is. I went to disaster area from time to time, and tried my best to help more people. From then on, I understand what food means to everyone, and lack of it could bring how much suffer to us. Food is importand in any way, but I think this is understood by me deeper than anyone else.
