Memories about food

(picture from: http://www.nihaotw.com/jm/tqfc/200902/t20090226_431758.htm)
Food, for me, is not only what we eat everyday, but also contains a deeper meaning. As we know, food can provide us energy, enjoyment, and even a chance to save other's life. On May 12th, 2008, a big disaster hit southwest of China. On that day, a big earthquake brought terror, death, and endless suffer to chinese people. It caused more than 67,000 deaths, and among the people died in this disaster, 5,333 students lost their life. Futhermore, this disaster destroyed highway and other path which could lead people run away from their ruined hometown to search for help and food or water. They were suffered not only because of the terrible disaster taking away people they loved, but also the lack of food and water. They were stuck in the ruins without any supply. They suffered a lot from hunger and thirst. At that very moment, food first strongly proved its importance to those people. The saving program contined for half a month, more and more people died under the ruins during that period due to hunger and dehydration. They were lucky to survive from the earthquake, but finally they were beaten by hunger and thirst. I went to Wenchuan where at the center of the earthquake after the disaster happened, with food and water. People suffered from the earthquake quickly surrounded me to beg for some food and water. They were so happy after receiving food, and some of them even cried. I was strongly impressed by such a view. I saw how much they suffered from that, and finally realized the power of food, and how terrible hunger is. I went to disaster area from time to time, and tried my best to help more people. From then on, I understand what food means to everyone, and lack of it could bring how much suffer to us. Food is importand in any way, but I think this is understood by me deeper than anyone else.

Hi, Yingyu! I totally agree with you. The meaning of food is quite different to everyone. We can cook a lot of delicious food to eat for relaxing ourselves, but we really can not waste any food in our daily life. Because there are a large number of people to suffer or die just because they do not have enough food to eat.

Just like you said, food do have some significant meaning. The earthquake was so terrible that we even could feel it in Suzhou. Some of my friends saw that the fans on the ceiling were swaying left and right. Food is really much more important than anything else in that condition. We should not waste any single piece of food.

Your point about food's importance when people suffering from disasters is absolutely right. The basic function of food is to provide energy and strangth. I am so happy you mentioned it in your post. It reminds me that while I was wasting food, some people on the other part of the earth even don't have enough food to eat.

Thanks for sharing this story. I think that we often take our access to food and water for granted, and so it's good to be reminded sometimes that we can lose them in a minute and that we need to be grateful for them.
